Studies to improve and clarify the taxonomy of known bird species, as well as description of entirely new species of birds. Results of the most recent studies are shown below.
New species:
Ardenna buchananbrowni, a new species of diving shearwater from the Pliocene of New Zealand (Tennyson et al., 2024).
Apteryx littoralis, a new species of kiwi from the mid-Pleistocene of New Zealand (Tennyson & Tomotani, 2022).
Procellaria altirostris, a new species of petrel from the Pliocene of New Zealand (Tennyson & Tomotani, 2021).
Taxonomic revisions:
Revision of the genus Aburria, the piping guans (Tomotani et al., 2026).
A revision of the status of ochraceous piculets and tawny piculets, Picumnus limae and P. fulvescens (Lima et al., 2020).
A revision of the species status of the chestnut headed chachalaca, Ortalis ruficeps (Tomotani et al., 2020).
A revision of the remote chachalaca, Ortalis remota, as a distinct species from the speckled chachalaca, Ortalis guttata (Silveira et al., 2017).
